Sir Sebastian of Tākaka

Golden Bay, New Zealand is a beautiful place with beautiful characters, and one of the most beloved is Sir Sebastian; resident feline at Earth Gems, Tākaka. 

Sir Sebastian is what I would call 'chonky', although much of this is surely his stunning black fur coat. He has pale green eyes which light up the shop (when he is awake!), and he has the most lovely whiskers which add to his regality.

As one of many locals who worship Sir Sebastian, I will always pay him a visit when I'm in town, and often have the privilege of brushing his thick coat. 

The best way I could show my appreciation as an artist, was to capture his likeness in a portrait. After many sketches and photos taken, I finally produced a piece which captures his qualities, and of course his beautiful eyes. Coloured pencil was my medium of choice; as it is a great way to capture finer details and subtle contrasts.

Presenting the framed portrait to Sir Sebastian and his loyal companion Fay was an absolute delight. I was so pleased at their approval and so happy it sits pride of place in the shop. Customers can also show appreciation by purchasing the printed greeting card of the original portrait. 

I love my community and these special characters give joy to many.
